Advie Gundogs
Working English pointers in the Scottish Highlands

Derry Argue answers your questions about working bird dogs in the UK. His Advie English pointers are trained for hunting upland game for the traditional sport of "shooting over dogs", for game research, and for falconry in the Scottish Highlands.

Not pets but stylish working gundogs.

Millers.jpg (15008 bytes)                All about Advie Gundog kennels in the Highlands of Scotland. In the photo you can see the hills of Sutherland in the distance. The kennels were started by me in 1969 breeding pure working bird dogs for discerning sportsmen who hunt on foot. Since that date, dogs from my kennel have been exported to over 26 countries world-wide.

Pictured  with two Llewellin setters is Derry. Click on the link to learn more.

Dogroup.jpg (20096 bytes)  Everything you want to know about buying (and shipping) a gundog in the UK.

What about quarantine and shipping? How do you know what to buy? What do FTCh, ShCh, FTW, and all the other letters in the pedigree mean? How much reliance should you place on field trial awards? What are the costs of exporting a dog? How do you know a show dog from a working dog?

For the latest news....

An update on what's going on at Miller's Place? It's all now on a separate page.... Dogs for sale? Quail for dog training? What's happening?

oscar.jpg (37053 bytes)  We British have been training pointing dogs since the 15th century. Yes, that is a 15 inch adjustable wrench that Oscar the GSP is carrying. Our methods are basically the same as they have been for centuries -- because they work!  Read (and watch on our videos) how we train our dogs humanely with nothing more than a piece of string. We don't need electric collars at Advie Gundogs. If you are wise, you will avoid those kennels that do.

Shooter.jpg (11687 bytes)  Hunting (what we Brits call shooting) over bird dogs. It is the same all over the world. But there are differences. Read about them in this section. What game birds do we hunt? Where do we hunt? When do we hunt? Why do we do it differently? How can you arrange to go shooting/hunting in Scotland?

The English Kennel Club has a total monopoly over field trials in the UK. Dog owners either compete in these events -- or they don't compete at all! A small group seem to have things neatly sown up. Is this fair? Does it encourage the better breeding and understanding of working gundogs?

dogs2.jpg (44891 bytes)  Advie English pointers.
This is Advie Annan ("Garry") pointing quail. Well, if you think all English pointers are the same, you may be in for a surprise. These are pure working gundogs and have been line bred by Derry Argue at Advie Gundogs for foot hunting for over thirty years. They are the original source and don't come much better. They are the same type of dogs described by William Arkwright in "The Pointer and His Predecessors" in 1903 and you can see them in action on the videos obtainable from Firth Productions (see below).

Mumnpups.jpg (33791 bytes)  If you want to learn more about gundogs, go to the page for Firth Productions. Details of our videos and books about pointing dogs with reviews, prices, and an  Order Form. Place an order for a book or video today.
